Woody Harrelson, who has on more than one occasion shown us that he has the skills to at least pretend like he can play some basketball (White Men Can’t Jump, Semi Pro), scored the game winning goal during the Soccer Aid charity game benefiting UNICEF in the UK.
The goal was scored on the 11th penalty kick in the overtime shoot-out, which gave his Rest of the World team a victory over England in front of a crowd of 65,000 people (More than any soccer match in the U.S. ever gets).
With World Cup fever heating up around the globe this was perfect timing for a charity event, but I just couldn’t even imagine how boring this game had to be to watch. Now I am not a soccer hater, but it is tough for me to watch celebrity basketball games, and those events usually are at least somewhat entertaining. Watching a bunch of non-athletes, combined with soccer legends playing a game that is at times slow to watch anyway just seems like punishment.
But once again, this obviously proves that there is something about soccer that the rest of the world gets that the U.S. has just not caught onto.
