No More Ties In The World Cup A Possiblility
It is being reported that FIFA President Sepp Blatter is considering banning ties, or draws from the World Cup.
This is some of the best World Cup news I have heard in a very long time. Make no mistake, ties are one of he worst things about soccer. Many teams employ the strategy of playing for a tie, or even worse, a scoreless tie. When they’re up against a superior opponent, sometimes it’s the best a team can hope for.
How any fan can leave a game feeling satisfied after a tie is beyond me. I personally just don’t get it.
Blatter said he would consider both golden goal (sudden-death) and shootouts.
Dear Mr. Blatter: Please don’t let it be shootouts. Shootouts do not fairly determine who is the better team. It’s the same as ending a basketball game with a free throw competition. No thanks.
But sudden-death golden goal is a great idea. If both teams knew they would be playing until the end of time before someone scores a goal, they would play to win.
And as everyone already knows, you play to win the game.
