Before the opening kickoff, each team has a hope that THIS is their year! Unfortunately for 31 of those teams, this isn’t their year.

Championship or not, each team provides us with countless story lines of booms and busts, ups and downs, triumph and heartbreak. Here are some bold predictions for the upcoming NFL season…

1) The New York Jets won’t make the playoffs. Hyped as the ‘sexy’ team to make some noise this year, the Jets have become overrated before even taking a snap. Rex Ryan has painted a bull’s-eye on the teams back the size of his rotund belly. The quarterback position is shaky at best. Mark Sanchez stinks. There… I said it. He is garbage.

The running game is going to lean heavily on Shonn Greene, a running back who has more career fumbles than touchdowns. The defense will be solid, but in the AFC East it’s going to take more than a few “3 and out’s” to win the division. Sorry Jets fans… enjoy your Hard Knocks.

2) The dynamic receiving duo in Cincinnati will resurrect Carson Palmer’s career. Carson Palmer has been called a “noodle arm POS” by some JOCKpost readers, and while that may be true, Ocho and TO give the Bengals an impressive arsenal of weapons at Palmer’s disposal. Add to that Cedric Benson and the improved running game, and we could very easily see a 3,500 yard, 28 touchdown, 12 interception year for the former Trojan.

3) Mike Singletary and his San Francisco 49ers will win the NFC West, helping Alex Smith shed his “bust” label. With Frank Gore carrying the majority of the load, the offense will be much improved. Michael Crabtree has some experience under his belt, and Vernon Davis is the most imposing tight end in the league. This offense will be fun to watch, and Singletary is ready to hand the keys to Smith. Keep ‘er on the road, son.

4) The Detroit Lions will win 9 games. Jahvid Best is my lock for rookie of the year, and the rest of the offense is ready to absolutely explode. Calvin Johnson is a beast, and Matthew Stafford is primed for his time in the spotlight. Playing indoors, this offense has the potential to be “The Greatest Show on Turf” version 2.0.

5) Brett Favre will have a terrible season. The old gun slinger may prove me wrong, but let’s face facts; his offensive line is suspect. His best wide out is sidelined half the year. His next best wide out has more problems in the head than Lindsay Lohan. His go to is Bernard Berrian. Take a second to read that again… HIS GO-TO WIDE RECEIVER IS BERNARD FREAKING BERRIAN. Sorry Brett. You went to the well one too many times. Walk away.

EA Sports NCAA Football 2011 Conference Simulation Percentages [Pie Charts]

NCAAF

College Football

Conference Champions

EA Sports

Football Games

NCAA Football 2011

Percentages

Pie Charts

Predictions

Simulations

As I patiently wait for the greatest sports season of the year to come, I need something to keep me busy and give me a little fix. The Thunder are not your typical eight seed. They finished the regular season with the same record as the Spurs and Blazers but were placed in the eight spot due to tie-breaker rules.

The Lakers have been pretty inconsistent all season and will need to play good basketball to put away a surprising Thunder team, led by the league scoring leader, Kevin Durant. The Thunder have a great 1-2 punch in Russell Westbrook and Durant, but will need the role players to step up if they want to pull off the upset.

My Prediction: Lakers win 4-2
JP14 Prediction: Lakers
atom Prediction: Thunder
MC McMahon Prediction: Lakers

2) Dallas Mavericks (55-27) vs. 7) San Antonio Spurs (50-32)

2010 Season Stats

Mavericks || Spurs

PPG: 102.0 || 101.4
RPG: 41.7 || 42.8
APG: 23.4 || 22.3
FG%: .465 || .473
Leading Scorer: Dirk Nowitzki (25.0 ppg) || Tim Duncan (17.9 ppg)

The battle of Texas should come down to the final game. The Spurs will need big games from Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker in order to keep this series interesting.

I see the leadership of Jason Kidd and Nowitzki being too much for the veteran Spurs, but it will come down to the wire.

My Prediction: Mavericks win series 4-3
JP14 Prediction: Mavs
atom Prediction: Mavs
MC McMahon Prediction: Mavs

3) Phoenix Suns (54-28) vs 6) Portland Trailblazers (50-32)

2010 Season Stats

Suns || Blazers

PPG: 110.2 || 98.1
RPG: 43.0 || 40.2
APG: 23.3 || 20.4
FG%: .492 || .461
Leading Scorer: Amare Stoudamire (23.1 ppg) || Brandon Roy (21.5 ppg)

If Brandon Roy doesn’t play — and it is looking that way — this will not even be a series. That’s something you do not see in the NBA anymore. But just for s**ts and giggles, here is a breakdown of the first round match-ups along with some of our writers’ picks.

Eastern Conference

1) Cleveland Cavaliers (61-21) vs. 8) Chicago Bulls (41-41)

2010 Season Stats

Cavs || Bulls

PPG: 102.1 || 97.5
RPG: 42.5 || 44.5
APG: 22.4 || 20.8
FG%: .485 || .451
Leading Scorer: Lebron James (29.7 ppg) || Derrick Rose (20.8 ppg)

Unless Lebron gets injured in the next couple days, or just wants to show how bad ass he is and sit out the first couple games, the Bulls might as well wave the white flag.

The Cavs are fully healthy and ready to go with the return of Shaq at the center position. Cleveland finished with the best record in the NBA this season and are on a mission to win the franchise’s first title.

They are not going to let a team that finished the regular season with a .500 record get in their way. In fact I see this series being an embarrassment for the Bulls, which will leave them wondering if they should have just let the Raptors have the final playoff spot.

My Prediction: Cavs sweep the series 4-0
JP14 Prediction: Cavs
atom Prediction: Cavs

2) Orlando Magic (59-23) vs. 7) Charlotte Bobcats (44-38)

Magic || Bobcats

PPG: 102.8 || 95.3
RPG: 43.2 || 40.8
APG: 19.7 || 20.2
FG%: .470 || .453
Leading Scorer: Dwight Howard (18.3 ppg) || Stephen Jackson (21.1 ppg)

Orlando will look to repeat their run from last year and get back to the finals, only this time not completely s**t the bed once they get to the finals.

They bring back the same team from last year, only swap Hedo Terkuglu for Vince Carter. The Magic may have won the season series 3-1 but I see Charlotte putting up a pretty good fight in their first playoff appearance as the Bobcats.

Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace will have to lead the way if they are going to have any chance of slowing the Magic down. Tyson Chandler, if healthy enough, will give Howard some trouble down low.

Luckily for the Magic they have two other All-Stars in Vince Carter and Rashard Lewis who will be able to carry the load.

My Prediction: Magic win the series 4-2
JP14 Prediction: Magic
atom Prediction: Magic

3) Atlanta Hawks (53-29) vs. 6) Milwaukee Bucks (46-36)

2010 Season Stats

Hawks || Bucks

PPG: 101.7 || 97.7
RPG: 41.7 || 43.0
APG: 21.8 || 21.2
FG%: .468 || .436
Leading Scorer: Joe Johnson (21.3 ppg) || John Salmons (19.9 ppg)

Two of the more surprising teams in the East will face off in this first round battle. But, it is as real as Northern Iowa. This team came to play and is showing they are every bit better than the nine seed they recieved at the beginning of this tournament.

With Kalin Lucas out for the Spartans, look for Northern Iowa’s Cinderalla story to continue into the Elite Eight.

Michigan State showed last week that not having Lucas is a problem by blowing a double digit lead to Maryland and getting bailed out on a buzzer beating three to get into the sweet sixteen.

#2 Ohio State vs. #6 Tennessee

Ohio State should be saying their blessings every day for the road to the Final Four that has been presented to them.

#1 seed Kansas gets upset by Northern Iowa, #3 seed Hoyas s**t the bed against Ohio in the opening round, and Michigan State is now without their best player in Lucas.

You would think the Buckeyes should cruise into the Final Four.

Not so fast my friend.

The past two weeks have shown a trend of OSU starting out slow and sloppy (just how I like my girls, not basketball games). This will be an extremely close game throughout, but I look for John Diebler and David Lighty to continue to pick up the slack for Evan Turners horrible play (mainly turnovers) and push the Bucks into the elite eight. O-H!!!

East Regional
Picks by MC McMahon

Ok, so it turns out even with the countless hours I spent watching college basketball this winter, I couldn’t pick a winner with tomorrow’s newspaper today.

#1 Kentucky vs #12 Cornell

Jesus, was I wrong about the Cornell Nard-Dogs. Turns out they can ball. But the buck will finally stop here. Big Blue has too much of everything for Cinderella — too much speed, size, and ability.

The Nard-Dogs haven’t faced anyone like John Wall and Co. the entire year, let alone this tournament. Quincy Pondexter has been an animal all season long, and the Huskies can really fill it up.

The Mountaineers have not been impressive in the least in the tourney, and with the loss of Truck Bryant, I anticipate the annual Bob Huggins Early Exit to happen this weekend.

West Regional
Picks by atom

6-2 in the first round. 3-1 in the second. Midwest Region

By now you have analyzed your brackets enough to know that the Midwest is the toughest divisions to be in for the 2010 tourney. I am excited to watch how this division plays out, because we should be provided with some great games … in the second round. Unfortunately, with such dominance comes a boring first round. I do not anticipate many upsets occurring on Thursday or Friday.

#1 Kansas vs. #16 Lehigh
Let’s be honest, the only way Lehigh could win this game is if the Lady Jayhawks showed up to take on the Mountain Hawks.

#8 UNLV vs #9 Northern Iowa
The cliché of the 8/9 match-up being a coin flip continues in this region. I have gone back and forth with this pick and still am not satisfied. So, by the time I finish typing this I will have a pick for you (pretty confident, huh?) Northern Iowa has been hiding in the background all season, ranked in the high 20’s. Their non-conference schedule was not impressive, but they did have a solid win against everyone’s dark horse, Sienna (82-65). UNLV started out red hot, winning 12 of their first 13 games. The one loss coming against Kansas State. They hit a little rough patch in the second half of the season that caused them to drop from the top 25. The MWC has four teams in the tourney this year compared to the MVC’s one. Therefore, having played better competition throughout the season, I have to say that UNLV will move on to play Kansas.

#5 Michigan State vs #12 New Mexico State
The Aggies are another team that slipped in by way of winning their conference tournament. They got a tough draw, having to play Michigan State. It seems like every year Sparty decides to play their best ball in the tourney. Last year it got them to the national championship game. I don’t see them going that far this year, but they should have no problem with New Mexico State.

#4 Maryland vs. #13 Houston
I would love to see the Cougars send Greivis Vasquez and the Terps home early, but unfortunately we are going to have to put up with him for at least two games. Houston got into the tournament by playing the game of their season, beating UTEP in the Conference USA championship game. Look for Maryland to put the clamps on Aubrey Coleman and cruise into the second round.

#6 Tennessee vs #11 San Diego State
This is where the picks start to get a little tricky in the Midwest. I have been dogging Tennessee all year for their lack of consistency and lazy play. Right when you think they are down and out they come out and pull out a big win (UK and Kansas). If Tennessee plays like they are capable, this should be an easy win. However it is March and anything can happen. San Diego State has experience in the tournament and having four players averaging double figures in scoring WILL cause a problem for the Vols. Having said that, I am going to go out on a limb here and say Tennessee will show up and move into the second round to face Georgetown.

#3 Georgetown vs #14 Ohio
Don’t be fooled by the poor MAC record of Ohio. They may not match up to the size of Georgetown, but having 5 players that average double figures is something the Hoyas can not ignore. If Georgetown has a mental breakdown like they did against Rutgers, the Bobcats could sneak out a win. However, I look for Georgetown to win big. Had West Virginia not pulled a shot out of their ass late in the game, Georgetown could have been Big East champs.

#7 Oklahoma State vs #10 Georgia Tech
I have heard talk that this is going to be a difficult pick. I really don’t see anything difficult about it. You have a team in Oklahoma State that finished 9-7 in a solid Big 12 conference with great wins over Kansas, Baylor, Kansas State, and Texas A&M. While on the other side you have Georgia Tech who finished 7-9 in a soft ACC. The Cowboys will move on to face the Buckeyes in the second round. Book it.

#2 Ohio State vs #15 UC Santa Barbara
Look for the Gauchos to give Evan Turner wide open dunks in hopes that he slips and fractures his back again. California beat UCSB by 21 earlier in the season and the Buckeyes had no problem with Cal. Draw your own conclusions.

JOCKpost 2010 NCAA Tournament Predictions, East Region

NCAAB

2010

East Region

NCAA Tournament

Predictions

Throughout the NCAA Tournament we will list our picks and give you a glimpse into why we picked them. That way you can make fun of us after we inevitably pick every game wrong. In his 10 years at the helm in Austin, he’s had 2 players of the year (Durant and TJ Ford) and a guy this year that could have won it in Damion James. That is if his team wasn’t such bed-s**tters. Great recruiter, not so great coach. Marquette is battle-tested coming out of the Big East, with a lot of versatile players. And Buzz Williams dances like nobody’s business.

#3 New Mexico vs #14 Montana
Go Lobos! Steve Alford brought his attitude from his playing days at Indiana, where he finished as the school’s all-time leading scorer. He will NOT hesitate to talk s**t to your best player.

#7 Clemson vs #10 Missouri
Missouri. This bracket is filled with bed-s**tting coaches, but Oliver Purnell might just be the best (worst?). His teams start every year like a bat out of Meat Loaf’s Hell, then fall apart. You can count on it, like death and taxes. He’s never made it out of the NCAAs 1st round, and this year should be no different. It should make for an exciting game though, as both teams deploy full court pressure almost exclusively.

#2 West Virginia vs #15 Morgan State
The Mountaineers will win this one. Madden has actually been correct in 5 of the last 6 Super Bowls with the only incorrect prediction being the Giants over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

Well with all the success that Madden has been having in predicting the eventual Super Bowl champion, we here at JOCKpost are looking to take them on with some Super Bowl predictions of our own.

Even though we are confident in our sports knowledge (or lack there of), to make things easier on ourselves, each of our writers get to individually make their own pick.

What? You didn’t think we were stupid enough to challenge a computer 1 on 1 did you?

Madden: Saints 35 Colts 31

This year, Madden NFL predicts a close Saints victory, with a final score of 35 – 31 over the Colts. According to the game, Drew Brees will be named the MVP after passing for 299 yards and three touchdowns. Reggie Bush will account for two more touchdowns, one rushing, and one on a punt return.

Jp14: Colts 38 Saints 24

Peyton Manning can not be stopped. Every game he plays is a clinic on how to win football games. The Saints aren’t even the best team in the NFC and if the Vikings didn’t gift wrap the NFC Championship we’d have a more competitive Super Bowl.

KB: Saints 38 Colts 34

I’m going with the Saints. New Orleans just seems to be more athletic than the Colts. They are deeper at running back and wide receiver. The Colts have the advantage at QB and TE, but with Dwight Freeney likely not to play, Brees will have more time to find his receivers and Bush out of the backfield. I’m going with 38-34 in the shootout … WHO DAT!

thetruckersfriend: Colts 17 Saints 9

As much as everyone expects it to be a shoot-out, I see it being a low scoring game.

MC McMahon: Saints 31 Colts 27

Dwight Freeney, obviously, has a serious negative affect on Indy. New Orleans’ defense/special teams have a significant play-making advantage over Indianapolis’, and I think that will be the difference.

Cheff: Colts 31 Saints 27

With Dwight Freeney being a huge question mark, the Colt’s defense may suffer a bit. Despite this, and despite New Orleans playing with a lot of confidence, I still feel Peyton Manning will find a way to pull it out. The game should be close, and it could come down to who has the ball last.

atom: Colts 30 Saints 14

Peyton Manning is on a mission, and he will not let his defense lose this for him. Even if Dwight Freeney can’t play, I still expect a solid performance from the Colts defense. The Saints’ offense will sputter and the Colts will pull away late for Peyton’s 2nd Super Bowl.
