Spain Upset By Switzerland, But They Still Have Hotter Fans

The world’s biggest sporting event had its biggest upset today, when the Swiss knocked off the Spaniards 1-0 today in Durban, SA. The Swiss, known more for their pocketknives and pussiness than their football prowess, surprised the World Cup audience for the second tournament in a row. In 2006, they became the first (and thus far only team) to be eliminated without conceding a goal.

The FIFA’s 24^th ranked team nonetheless showed a lot of heart and balls against the #2 ranked Spanish squad. Spain out-shot the Swiss 24-8 and was on the offensive for 63 minutes of the game. But it was their offense that was truly “offensive.” With numbers like those, it’s inexcusable that the #2 team in the world would lose to the Swiss, whose previous best finish was the quarterfinals in 1954. But Gelson Fernandes would not be denied on this day. He scored in the 75^th minute, and relegated La Furia Roja to sticking to their favorite position come World Cup time-losers.

The most dominant team in the world over the last few years has also only ever advanced to the quarterfinals as well, finishing fourth in 1950. But they have gone 48-2 over the last 4 years, including the longest undefeated streak in history, at 35, and a current 12 match winning streak. One thing the Spanish have going for them though? MUCH hotter fans!!
