Many athletes are respected but only a select few are actually feared. With the kickoff to Super Bowl 44 in sight, one name comes to mind: Peyton Manning.
On the outside, there is nothing scary about him. Until your lifelong goals are right in front of you and you have to stop him to achieve them.
Guys like Drew Brees, Tom Brady, and Donovan McNabb are respected quarterbacks, and deservedly so, but Peyton Manning is feared.
With the game on the line, who is better to lead your team than Manning?
Why do you think Bill Belichick went for it on 4th and 2 on his own 28 earlier this season? He knew if he punted, Manning would beat him. This is coming from the smartest coach in the league.
Mike Tyson in his prime was not just respected, he was feared. And this was before his repeated exhibitions in cannabilism.
Barry Bonds when he was more juiced up than a florida orange field, was feared. In fact, he holds the distinction of being one of only three players in major league history who was intentionally walked with the bases loaded. Think
about that for a second… He was intentionally walked with the bases loaded.
Joe Montana and Jerry Rice were feared, and Michael Jordan was probably the most feared basketball legend of all time.
All of these athletes put fear in their opponents because they dominated their respective sport. Peyton Manning is no exception.
Think back to almost two weeks ago. The Jets held a 17-6 lead just before halftime and were confident as ever until Manning drove down the field to cut the score to a four point deficit at intermission.
That drive sunk the Jets confidence and they had no answers for the Manning-led Colts in the second half.
Sunday’s mega-game should be close because the Saints are explosive enough to keep up, but they won’t win the turnover battle by a landslide as they did against the Vikings. The reason for that: team discipline and Peyton Manning.
Fear the Manning.
