Once a Mid-Major, Always a Mid-Major

Once a Mid Major, Always a Mid MajorI am not sure if I am the only person that watched the Fiesta Bowl last night, but if I read one more article on Boise State deserving a shot at the National Title, I think I might explode.

Don’t get me wrong, both of these teams are very well coached. Both teams play solid defense, and they do not make many mistakes. But putting a Mid-Major team in the National Championship is absurd.

I keep hearing, “Look at what Boise did to Oklahoma, and what Utah did to Alabama in the past”.

I don’t care.

Oklahoma and Alabama did not come to play in either of those games. Why? Because they did not care about playing Boise State and Utah. These games meant so much more to these smaller schools, because it was a chance for them to prove people wrong. But I will tell you this. If these games would have been for the National Championship, it would have been a completely different story. The Big Boys would have come ready to play and the David and Goliath storyline would not have been quite as dramatic.

The game last night reminded me of watching a High-School All Star Game. Both teams looked talented, but it is obvious they just are not up to par to the perennial power house teams.

So everyone, please settle down. There is a reason the BCS did not want these teams to play the larger schools, and trust me, it is not because they are afraid that Boise would have beaten Florida. They were afraid that Florida just wouldn’t have mentally shown up and given the WAC and MWC something else to whine about.

I completely agree. The caliber of athlete between a powerhouse and a mid-major are pretty significant. Granted teams like Cinci, Boise, and TCU have players that could play and start for the likes of OSU, Florida and Texas. That being said OSU, Florida, and Texas are stacked with players like Marty Gilyard on their team. On the other hand I don’t believe these teams should get a cold shoulder for going undefeated. The BCS could create a mid-major championship game? Or just go to a play-off system and make everyone happy!

Whatever credit you can take away from Boise State is fine by you huh? It's funny that the SEC and the Big XII have to make excuses when they lose. They can't own up to getting beaten.
