Two runners narrowly missed out on the grand prize at Australia’s Gold Coast Airport Marathon this Sunday.
Just how narrow, you say? By a total of nine seconds.
That’s about the average length of a yawn.
They give out $25,000 prize to any man who can run a marathon faster than 2 hours, 10 minutes. For the women it’s 2 hours, 30 minutes.
One runner, Nicholas Manza Kamakya from Kenya, ran it in a total of 2 hours, 10 minutes and ONE SECOND.
One. Freaking. Second.
He handled it well, telling the APĀ ”I’m just happy. For me it’s so nice [to win],” said Manza.
“It’s very special for me because it’s my first time in Australia and I’m happy because I’ve run the course record.”
Nice, but come on. 25 grand has got to go a long way in Kenya.
The other runner, Goitetom Haftu Tesema from Ethiopia missed the prize by eight seconds.
With the average yearly salary in Ethopia hanging in there at a robust, $300-500 annually, no doubt she is sick to her stomach.
I know I would be.
