Major League Ballparks Setting Records In Futility

Major League Ballparks Setting Records In FutilityThe different MLB teams have set stadium attendance records for the least amount of attendance in stadium history.

The Toronto Blue Jays had only 10,610 show up Wednesday night, the smallest crowd since the ballpark once called SkyDome opened in 1989.

“It’s weird when you get used to playing in front of big crowds,” he said. “As all of us did in the minor leagues, we played in front of crowds anywhere from 500 people to 10,000 at the big games.”

The Cleveland Indians lured 10,071 to Progressive Field on Wednesday night to take on the Rangers, the smallest crowd since the ballpark formerly known as Jacobs Field opened in 1994.

The previous low crowd at Progressive Field was 11,408 on April 21, 2009, against Kansas City.

In Baltimore, only 9,129 fans showed up last Monday night, the tiniest crowd in the 19-year history of Camden Yards.

“I didn’t hear anything — just quiet,” Orioles third baseman Miguel Tejada said Thursday. “It’s weird, because it’s the big leagues, it’s a major league game. I thought people would like to see it and see good players.”

There have been many different reasons given for the lack of draw.  One reason is the chilly April weather.  Another reason is that people have more things to do.  If your team sucks, you’re just not going to take a day off work to catch that Wednesday afternoon game.

Or what if your team is built with almost nothing but AAA players?  Do they really expect fans to drop $50-100 for tickets to watch Florida vs Washington?

It is really sad though to see all these brand new ballparks empty as hell.  And am I the only one who thinks ita f**king crazy for the Marlins to build a new stadium?  What they need to do is get the hell out of spring training land.

While these numbers are eye-opening, record low attendances in April are really no surprise.

Last year, eight stadiums (excluding new Yankee Stadium and Citi Field) set record lows by late May: Toronto, Cleveland, St. Louis, Atlanta, Cincinnati, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington.

It’s still gotta be really bad news when your (Cleveland & Totonto) team is setting attendance futility records every year.  They are going to have to do something about it.

Here’s an idea: Field a competitive team!
