It’s been a while since I’ve bought a new Madden. Before today, Madden 10 was my most recent copy.
After reading some pleasant reviews and raves about how the new Careers Mode is so much better than the old Franchise Mode I decided to buy it.
Sixty-five bucks with tax. That ain’t chump change.
I’ve spent the evening with Madden 13 and I am so pissed at EA Sports right now I can barely contain myself.
Maybe I’m not your typical Madden player. I love Franchise Mode. Don’t f**k with it. Make it better, but don’t f**k with it. I’ve been playing Franchise Mode for almost a decade and there are plenty of suggestions I could make that would improve the experience.
And don’t bring up that NFL Head Coach game again. It sucked.
I didn’t play Madden to actually play the game. I love the feeling of being a GM. Running a franchise from top to bottom. Hiring and firing coaches, training staffs, managing ticket prices to ensure profitability, stadium renovations, the ability to relocate — all that. Those were my favorite parts of the game.
This year EA Sports has removed so many of the features I loved that I feel like I’m playing a completely different game. It’s mind boggling.
Let me list the things that you can’t do that I’ve found so far (in no particular order):
You can’t import NCAA Draft classes. That’s right, this is half the reason people bought NCAA Football in the first place. Nice one, EA.
You can’t have more than one Franchise at a time on the same console. You and your roommate now need two different XBOX’s, an internet connection, and two different copies of Madden 13 to play against each other in the same league. This is true for OFFLINE MODE ALSO. WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!?
There is no player editing of any kind in Coach Career. I used to love to summon my inner Belichick and make an awesome LE out of a strong, but quick LOLB. Or make a big SS a ROLB. That’s how I built a strong defense over the course of 4-5 years.
But that’s not all. In addition to not being able to change player positions, you can’t edit player numbers, you can’t edit their equipment, nothing. The roster EA made is the roster you are stuck with. You didn’t want all that freedom anyway did you?
You can’t be a GM. Only a coach or a player. As I mentioned above, this removes almost everything I liked about Madden.
The menus suck so bad, I can’t believe someone got paid to design them. If you like jumping around from screen to screen, with as many button presses as possible, then this game is for you.
Example: I am looking at the depth chart and I wonder how my RB2 is doing this season. No player cards here. Nope, you gotta go back out of the Personnel Menu and then to the Statistics Menu where you click on the Season Stats menu where you see the stats. Then you have to go all the way back to the Depth Chart again to do whatever it was you were doing. By the time I get back there I forgot what I was doing. I used to be able to press the right stick. Unf**kingexcusable.
You can’t import a created player into Coach Career. Sometimes it was fun to make a sweet prospect to see who drafted him. Then you could follow up a few years later to see if he ever ended up being worth a s**t. Not anymore.
You can’t even WATCH your own team play without playing. Did you like watching the team you built play a game on their own? Well, f**k you, it’s not in this game. You either gotta play or simulate. Did you like the play-by-play simulation? It’s gone too. and even after you hit simulate, it doesn’t simulate right away. You guessed it! It makes you go to another f**king menu to see who won. At least you can access game stats from that same menu.
No “Simulate to End” or “In-Game Saving”. If you do happen to be playing and are taking a severe ass kicking (or giving one) and you don’t feel like playing the game anymore then you have two choices: keep playing or quit.
No Fantasy Draft. Also fun. Also not in this game.
IF YOU LOVE MADDEN FRANCHISE MODE, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. THEY TOOK OUT EVERYTHING THAT WASN’T NAILED DOWN. I WANT MY GOD DAMN MONEY BACK.
If I’m wrong about some of these things and they are possible and I couldn’t find them, then it’s still EA Sports’ fault for not making the s**t easy to find. I’ve been playing this game for 15 f**king years — I should know how to find s**t. Did I mention how much these menus suck?
F**k this game. I’m booting up my Madden 10 right after I put this fraud up on eBay.

seriously someone should be fired for taking franchise mode out of this game. Who is in charge of the research dept at EA? how is it possible to remove the second best feature on the game? do they. I ve heard that there is a simple solution to this problem. just put it back in and stop tryhing to outthink yourself fellas. the same thing happened to ghost recon…The game is already bad ass…There is no need to change something that already works….new maps new guns new enemys….thats it…No need for a totally new game….same with madden…obviously enhance the game play.after that most of the rest of madden is filler and stupid…..Sorry EA…put franchise back on and stop being so lame…thank you

heres what you do guys, you call the phone number in the back of the madden game, tell EA the game did not load. you tried the same game on 2 or 4 consoles and you had no luck, they will tell you to send them a copy of the receipt and the game, its all insured. and they give you an unopened copy. you still have your original receipt and then you take it back to the store you purchased it at. and get your money back…. this works, i do it all the time or take it game stop and trade it in for 16.00 cash. or 25 to 30 store credit but hurry cause that credit is going down every day. EA f**king sucks. and well all knew this game was going to be crap b4 it came out. and yet you all bought it anyways… f**king morons.
You are spot-on my friend, spot-on. What were they thinking? I wasted $60+ dollars too. You can bet I won’t get burned next year. I think the Madden development team needs some good competition. I wish another developer would create an NFL game that stays true to the idea of giving the most people a great gaming experience rather than forcing us to swallow what they think we SHOULD like.

I’ve been playing Madden NFL since “Madden 93″ (on my Sega Genesis, no less). I have NEVER traded in one year’s Madden before the next one’s released, much less within a month of it coming out! But when I learned GameStop would give me $32 store credit, I jumped at the chance. What in the holy F&%$ing F@$K were they thinking? It’s like “You WILL play online! Bwahahahaaa!” say the developers. I hate playing online because I end up with a quitter, or glitcher or stupid ignorant kid or something. F this game! Avoid at all costs!!
I hated how they simplified the game for dumb sports fans on 2012. The coaches only give you like +1 tackling or something. That pissed me off so I was gonna get 13 to see if they changed it. I guess not now…
yea “coach mode’ IS NO SUBSTITUTE! i have never been more disappointed in a game before this one in my LIFE! Madden12 Was Perfect in my opinion, in fact i REFUSE to purchase madden13 and still play madden12 Franchise mode. im disgusted this year and frankly hurt . i bought every madden since madden2000 and this is by far the worst.. no edit players rankings, no true franchise mode, looking at stats is difficult in coach mode and the menu’s move SO SLOW its unbelievable to me that EA would allow this to happen, they went and changed the entire feel of the game and to me its NOT SMOOTH at all, kinda like the select a team menu it’s full of lagging, Graphics ARE NO BETTER then 12′s, and Presentation ain’t that good either.. NO IMPROVEMENTS IN THIS GAME FOR ME! JUST DOWNGRADES AND FIXING THINGS THAT ARNT BROKE ! OMG EA WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!!!!!!!!! :( :(
OMG I just got this game, you are SO FUCKING RIGHT! They RUINED Madden this year. It is TERRIBLE. Even offline features I used to love, like creating a team, are gone. I thought games were supposed to get better each year, not worse! FUCK EA.
I’m sooooo pissed! Everything I enjoy from the game has been taken out, I’m returning it and will never buy it again until they put it back in… brutal. Oh and that goes for NCAA too which I only bought so I can import my draft class.

Agree with all of you. The easy to use Franchise Mode of the last DECADE was not only the main reason I bought Madden every year (that and on-line head-to-head), but Madden is the main purpose I’ve even bought a CONSOLE going back to the Christmas I got a Genesis and Madden ’95. Since then I’ve purchased a PS1, 2 and 3 and Madden every year. If this doesn’t get fixed, EA won’t be the only company losing a loyal customer…Sony will too.

I am so freakin sick of EA sticking it up the ass to all the people that don’t play Madden online. They save all the best features for the online mode and remove all the best offline features. Wish I got paid a ton of money to take a big sh#t, put it a box, and sell it to thousands of people expecting something awesome.

Im happy im not the only one thats been saying madden has been on the decline. I loved messing with tix prices, food prices, i think i even promotional give aways in 2005. Last year you can buy upgrades for stadiums which is gone. Its funny how in madden 13 plays still can run through walls. I love fantasy drafts but thats a thingnof the past. I share a madden with my brother and its stupid how you get 1 online pass to make more money. Overall its sad how bad maddens getting. It would be also nice to see maybe, every 2 or 3 months until the next madden comes out the following year, animation / cut scene updates. Another great idea, since pump fake sucks and no one uses it, if you pump it that yellow target should pop up as if you are acutally throwing it to the reciever. Also you should be able to pump it to any particular reciever you want. But madden is just fresh out of ideas i guess.

I think ever since Madden has been on the new gen consoles they’ve all sucked! laziness, and the lack of detail on the part of the developers won’t win over many fans. Instead of adding a stupid tweeter feed they could’ve spent more time on game play or even “franchise mode”… Madden 13… what a joke!!!
Well, people, this is what happens when one company has a monopoly with no competition. This EA team only focused on the physics engine which can produce some pretty awful, silly looking stumbles (how many times do you see guys tripping on another guy after the play is well over?). I completely agree with this blog…the menus are anything but ergonomically designed (I can hear an EA designer right now…”But wait…we have MORE of them!!”). I used to be an Electronic Arts fan from back in my Commodore 64 and Sega Genesis days….time for a divorce.
You people are idiots. First of all most of the things you said aren’t true. For instance, you can edit a player. You can change their number, the name of the school they went to and you can change all their equipment. And as far as design goes, suck it up. If you don’t like it build your own madden game. This is a GREAT game. Anyone else that reads this….disregard everything said up until this point.

I bought NHL13 and that sucked to they are slowly taking GM mode out of that and its a break-a-way fest and I traded it in for Madden, when i played madden I made a mistake of trading for it so now I have Black ops 2. SELL ALL OF YOUR EA SPORTS 13 GAMES

I have been playing madden since 98. Owned every single one to madden 10. Played madden 13 last weekend with a friend and it is a complete piece if s**t. Glad I didn’t buy it. I don’t play online because I always play some little twerp kid who lives his life playing the game online because he can’t get a gf or get laid. Always some little bastard with a hack or some little s**t that spent his allowance on all the boosters because he can’t get blown, even by the family dog. They took franchise mode trying to force more online play so they can rape you in the ass with more bs sales. F**k you EA Sports. And f**k you too maddenlover89. this sucks bad, i enjoy creating and editing my fake vikings team, using randy moss, ray lewis and greg jennings and use them to for franchise mode. improving and having fun with the stats, madden 25 better step up and do right. one thing this game sucks, the sal.cap is so low that you cant edit the ultimate team you wanted.
Hey was just looking to see what you guys wrote since I posted in December. If anyone at EA is reading this, just wanted to let you know that it’s months later and I’ve barely played the horrible latest version of this game. Seriously, I used to play it every day and I can count the number of times I’ve played this version on one hand. After the 3rd complete freeze-up in Offline Coach Mode or whatever you’re calling the ruined new version of Franchise Mode, I went and re-bought a used copy of Madden 12. The new version is WORTHLESS and you’ve lost a customer indefinitely unless I hear that you’ve fixed it in future versions. I’ve purchased this game on its day of release for the past 19 YEARS and I’m DONE unless you quit abusing your loyal customers. We already paid 60 bucks for it – quit fleecing us for online content. And everyone talking about how the quality is piss-poor since EA got a monopoly is absolutely right. You have a team called the Canton Greats who plays in Fawcett Stadium in “Columbus.” Nice attention to detail, clowns. Not only should every football fan know where the freaking Hall of Fame is, that error never should have made it all the way to the RETAIL RELEASE. Tells me you don’t have a single actual football fan working there or you’d know what your loyal customers want: accuracy, realism and a workable, FUN Franchise Mode. There’s a reason your Head Coach game lasted one year – it sucked! It was boring and full of tedious “busy work.” Why has it replaced the Classic Franchise Mode? I’d like to Sim a single pre-season in less than an hour, preferably less than 2 minutes.
How dare they limit me!! Playing Franchise Mode with all 32 teams is the only reason I ever bought Madden!! Every year, I spend MY seventy bucks to build MY league MY way!! Playing with just one team is BORING and REDUNDANT!! If I wanted to play a game where I can control just one team, then I’d play a baseball game on my phone for free!!! A lot of people weren’t fans of Ian Cummings when he was in charge of Madden. But at least he ran Franchise Mode the way it should be run. JOSH LOOMAN SUCKS!!! EA knew ’13 pissed a bunch of loyal fans off last year, so they say Franchise is coming back for ’25. And they were supposed to release some details about The new Franchise mode a couple days ago. But, not surprisingly, they went back on their word. I haven’t heard anything yet. I’ll continue not to buy any EA merchandise until they properly restore what we’ve loved for years.
