When you are a 5 tool player like Josh Hamilton, there is always a chance of being put in a dangerous situation – whether it be diving for a ball in the outfield, or taking a 95 mph fastball to the chin. Or in the case of Hamilton, sliding head first into home on a sac fly.
Hamilton broke his arm, and will be on the DL for the next 6-8 weeks. But to me, the interesting part of the after-game interview was how it appeared Hamilton blamed his 3rd base coach, Dave Anderson, for his injury.
“It was just a stupid play,” Hamilton said. “I definitely shouldn’t have done it.”
“I listened to my third-base coach,” Hamilton said. “That’s a little too aggressive. The whole time I was watching the play I was listening. [He said] ‘Nobody’s at home, nobody’s at home.’ I was like, ‘Dude, I don’t want to do this. Something’s going to happen.’ But I listened to my coach. And how do you avoid a tag the best? By going in headfirst and get out of the way and get in there. That’s what I did.”
As a Hamilton fan, I hope I am taking him out of context when I say he kinda sounds like a prick. Who blames their coach for sending him in a tag situation? As a 5 tool player, you are expected to steal bases, tag on fly balls, etc. That’s why they pay you $12 million a year, which isn’t bad for an ex-crack addict (How often do you think he thinks about how big of a rock he could buy?).
Also, when did Hamilton become a f**king psychic? He knew something was going to happen?
I like Hamilton’s story. I hope this is just a case of him being “stupid”.
