As most of you probably already know, Cardinals Pitcher Adam Wainwright is done for the season with an elbow injury that requires Tommy John Surgery. Such news will not only hurt the chances of the Cardinals making it back to the playoffs, but it will also help every other team’s chances just by not having to face one of the best pitchers in the NL.
If you are a player that is not on the Cardinals, you can’t necessarily consider this bad news. Sportsmanship be damned, if it helps your chances of succeeding, it’s a good thing.
So why is everyone so up in arms about the possibility of Jonny Gomes celebrating Adam Wainwright’s injury?
We all know the Reds and Cardinals don’t exactly get a long. And for the Reds, the Cardinals have always been that
older brother that beat the piss out of them at everything. Until last year. The Reds were finally able to overcome their older brother’s abuse, and in fact surpass them in many categories.
But as the younger brother, the Reds still have that lack of confidence that comes with years of beatings. Regardless if they finally won last year, they know that the Cardinals are still the team to beat in the NL Central. So why not get excited if your chances get a little better?
I, for one, use to always be glad as s**t when a star player on the opposing team I was playing couldn’t play for one reason or another. I didn’t necessarily wish for them to get injured, but if they did, I wasn’t going to sit around a feel bad for them. Sports, especially professional sports, are the mecca of competition. Why the f**k would you not want the biggest advantage?
Gomes has since gone on the recordclaiming that he did not celebrate Wainwright’s injury, but was simply questioning if the pitcher was in-fact done for the year, probably in a more-than-excited-like tone. But either way, as a competitor, I don’t see why he would even feel the need to apologize?
For all we know, Wainwright probably just has a case of Tennis Elbow anyway. We all know the Cardinals are just a bunch of “little bitches“.
