German Goalie Manuel Neuer Says He Fooled The Referee vs England [Video]

You have to love German keeper Manuel Neuer’s candor: “I realized it was tight, but I was quite sure [the ball] was over the line. I think that perhaps the way I carried on so quickly fooled the referee and made him think it was not over.”

He carries on a bit more: “After the game I was in doping control and saw it on the television. And yes, of course it was over and should have been a goal for England. It was lucky for us and unlucky for them.”

FIFA should be proud. Of course, all tournament there have been calls for instant replay being instituted on calls that involve a goal. This year’s World Cup has shown us a ridiculous amount of bad calls, that almost all could have been rectified with the employ of instant replay.

This one is great because even the goalie admits that the goal should have counted.  But what makes it even better is that he takes credit for tricking the referee into thinking it wasn’t a goal by reacting like it didn’t go in.

“I saw the ball, I quickly picked it up and I quickly restarted.

“If I had looked right or left, perhaps it would have struck the referee’s attention. Maybe, he might have considered awarding the goal.

“Clearly it was valid, I don’t have any doubt about it, I’ve seen the replays also.”

It’s really hard to tell whether or not this would have made the ultimate difference in the game since Germany ended up beating England 4-1.  But this goal would have made it 2-2. and a much different game.

Regardless, we can not continue to try to take the World Cup seriously when time after time we see ameteur officiating.  It’s an embarassment and it’s time for FIFA to stop the bleeding.
