We have all had those job interview questions that make us scratch our head and wonder, “What the hell does that have to do with anything?”
However, the question Miami Dolphins general manager, Jeff Ireland, had for Dez Bryant during his pre-draft interview is the most inappropriate one I have ever heard.
I speculate that Ireland wanted to see if he could hit a nerve by asking Bryant if his mother was a prostitute.
This question stems from his mother’s background of having Bryant while she was only 15 years old and serving jail time for selling crack. While that may fit a good description of a prostitute, it still does not give a high ranking employee any right to ask a future employee if his mother was a whore.
Ireland has been known to ask some obscure questions to prospective players, but this time it was a little too personal.
In an article written last week by Yahoo! Sports, Bryant told them that it made him very angry that the question came up, but he kept his cool and said “no.”
Ireland told reporters that it is “my job to find out as much information as possible about a player that I’m considering drafting. Sometimes that leads to asking in-depth questions. Having said that, I talked to Dez Bryant and told him I used poor judgment in one of the questions I asked him. I certainly meant no disrespect and apologized to him.”
How do you not mean any disrespect when you ask a person if their mom is a prostitute? That’s like walking up to Ben Roethlisberger and saying, “Hey Ben, no offense, but do you rape women?”
This morning on Mike and Mike, Eric Kuselias said that if an organization is going to pay someone $20 million they should be allowed to ask any questions they want.
I couldn’t disagree with this more, and it just shows how money influences the way people rationalize. Everyone should know by now, no matter how much money involved, you don’t talk s**t about someone’s momma.
Although I am still partial to a good “your mom” joke every now and then, if Ireland was just trying to get a reaction out of Bryant, he should have explained his line of questioning after the interview. Not wait a week later then call Bryant apologizing because the public found out about it.
