The LA Dodgers are currently up for bid, and the names looking to buy the franchise are quite noticeable. Magic Johnson as well as Mark Cuban are the biggest names out there, and as a fan of baseball, I think they would both make great additions to the owner ranks. But who would be the best owner for the Dodgers?
Magic has a lot of local connections going for him. Outside the obvious of playing for the Lakers, Magic is a local hero off the court as well – he has built many retail locations in the urban areas of LA helping the community, local economy, etc.
Over the last few decades, it is debatable that Magic Johnson could be the greatest sports figure in Los Angeles. The Dodgers are a team that is desperate for a positive change, and what would be better than bringing in Magic? It’s not only to give fans a sense of hope, but also allowing Magic the honor of being the first African American owner in MLB history.
But if you really want to make a positive impact with the fans, I think you have to go with Mark Cuban. I’m not from LA, so maybe Magic’s impact is even greater than I expect, but for me, Cuban would turn me from a pessimistic fan, to a fan that wants to screw the baseball world right in the ass.
If I were a Dodgers fan and Cuban was my owner, I would expect the best, most expensive players because that is how Mark Cuban rolls. Pujols, CJ Wilson, Prince Fielder (We’ll find a place for him) – give me all of ‘em. Buy me a championship, I am not above it.
Cuban would definitely be the Wicked Steinbrenner of the West, and I think it would be a great thing for the Dodgers and for baseball.
Either way you look at it, they would both have to be better than Frank McCourt, right?
