Whenever I think of athletes doing drugs before games, I always assumed that coke, meth, or some other type of upper would be the drug of choice. The combination of ridiculous energy and lack of feeling in your extremities really helps get you through 60 minutes of ass-kickings.
But it is possible that some players could smoke weed before games? Is it even more unbelievable that one of the greatest Quarterbacks of all time could have gotten ripped before taking the field?
Rumor ’round town is that former Dolphins Quarterback Dan Marino liked to toke on some pregame Labrador. Per former NFL Lineman Kyle Turley when asked in a recent radio interview about smoking before games -
“No, I never got the balls enough to do that. I heard Dan Marino did, down there in Miami. That’s a rumor, but I don’t know — you’d have to ask Danny. All those old pictures of him and his old hair, I wouldn’t pass it by him.”
“It’s locker room talk,” Turley continued. “I’ve heard a few things. I was going to do it one time in my prime, but definitely not when I wasn’t in my prime. It never happened — I was facing too many guys I needed to take care of so I wanted to be at my best. Not that I wouldn’t have been at my best — I’ve actually heard from guys that it actually slows things down so you can see things a little better and that’s where the whole Marino thing came from. And I don’t know if it’s true or not, but it’s something I heard that that was something that he was able to get relaxed before the games and not be too edgy and calm and collected and be able to see things more clearly on the field.”
Not many things would surprise me in sports anymore. These guys are superior athletes. They play football for a living. I doubt they would be able to go into work stoned as hell and sit at a computer all day, but you gonna tell me there isn’t an IT guy out there that doesn’t hit his bong once or twice before going to work?
However, Dan Marino setting NFL records while being stoned off his ass kinda makes me question how much of a loser I really am.
