In a recent column written for the Miami Herald, Dan Le Batard recycled some material that has been kicked around the blogosphere for a couple of years now.
It was one of the more worthless articles I’ve read as of late. I am writing about it now because it came from a guy I had thought, up until now, had a clue.
He takes sports media very seriously, as you would expect him to. But people don’t always want to receive their entertainment from people who take themselves so seriously. Dan Le Batard would not like JOCKpost and that’s cool with us. We just like making jokes.
In one of his many crusty rants he claims that new media (read: sports blogs) is getting stronger every day. Old media (read: him and his ilk) is “either aging or dying.” Most of his column laments that fact and certainly speaks of it in a tone that is disapproving at best.
He makes ignorant statements such as this:
“It is hard not to notice that newspapers keep going out of business while TMZ Sports is scheduled to open this year.”
Hey Dan, ever heard of WordPress? It’s not too expensive to set up a blog. Especially when you’re doing the marketing for them by writing about it.
He remarks that ”even Playboy” are laboring in this economy in what sounds like he’s confused as to why. Uhhh, I don’t know, maybe because it’s f**king boring!
He makes gigantic sweeping generalizations:
“Today’s kids — and kids are what make everything popular — don’t seem to be as judgmental as their parents. They want to see Portland center Greg Oden naked and the drunk photos of Texas center fielder Josh Hamilton just for the voyeuristic pleasure in it, not necessarily to judge it.”
Hey! All kids want to see Greg Oden’s cock!
He comes off as a Buzz-worthy curmudgeon. What’s awesome is that by me linking to his page (providing those damn clicks he despises so much) and commenting on it, I am actually helping him to do his job.
Like it or not, Dan, clicks are the interweb equivalent of ratings. Does he think that what he offers is art? He is a watered down version of the last 60 years of sports media. He tries to associate himself with old media, when in fact the OG old media would call him and his peers new media slimeballs.
SportsByBrooks has a much more thorough and mature breakdown of about 10 other ways Le Batard’s article was hypocritical and consistently contradictory.

Yeah I didn't realize how irritating he can be until I had to watch him on PTI every single day.
