Cavs Offer to Tom Izzo May or May Not Be Enough
The hot rumor going around the NBA this week involves the Cleveland Cavaliers extending an extremely lucrative offer to Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo.
Cavs owner Dan Gilbert is attempting to make a big splash, even if Izzo declines the offer.
It has been reported that the offer on Izzo’s desk right now is more than double his current salary, and comes with many perks that only a billionaire owner like Gilbert could offer.
Izzo currently makes roughly $2.8 million dollars in the Big 10, but a move to the Association would reportedly put Gilbert in a significantly higher tax bracket if he decides to accept the 6-year offer that is said to be worth more than $36 million dollars.
Izzo, college basketball’s best coach since John Wooden, would also have unlimited access to one of Gilbert’s private jets whenever he wanted.
Izzo has gone on record in the past that he doesn’t want to leave MSU until he brings home another National Championship, but an offer like this may never dangle in front of the 55-year-old coach ever again.
Whether Izzo accepts the deal or not, Gilbert is exploring many other options to overhaul the Cavs roster again this off season in hopes to impress free agent Lebron James.
Delonte West will not be a Cavalier after July 1st, lending more truth to that nasty rumor. West is a talented player with an extremely favorable contract that is being shopped, along with starting point guard Mo Williams.
Gilbert may try to package the backcourt duo along with JJ Hickson to bring in a big name talent such as Chris Bosh.
Dan Gilbert is doing his best to keep this franchise from falling apart, but there is one major obstacle that is preventing his success and ironically that is Lebron James.
If James would commit to be on the team next year, the offer to Izzo seems vastly more appealing.
If James would lace them up for the wine and gold, big name free agents would be much more likely to sign to play with the team.
James likely won’t make his decision anytime soon, and Gilbert and the Cavalier Nation need to prepare themselves for the whirlwind tour that’s about to take place.
Expect 24/7 SportsCenter coverage of Lebron dining on yachts with Russian billionaires and ringing the bell at the New York Stock Exchange.
Dan Gilbert and the Cleveland Cavs are at the mercy of Lebron James, and as backwards as that may sound, it is a fate that Gilbert has brought upon himself.
Now Gilbert is in the same boat as the rest of us. He will try and do whatever it takes to woo The King to stay, but ultimately he is stuck doing the same thing as the rest of us.
Waiting.
