2011 was a fantastic year in sports and I can only hope that 2012 will not be any different. Well, they can cut out the child molestation s**t, but other than that, time will only tell what kind of fantastic drama will unfold.

The best part about this video is not that Lee Corso swears on Gameday when deciding against picking SMU to win. I just love Kirk Herbstreit’s face immediately after he said it.

It is exactly the kind of face when your friend does something unbelievably ornery in class.

And then, of course, he apologized. You have to love the s**t eating grin he gives at the end. Because, he honestly doesn’t give a f**k.

I do believe this is the first time I’ve ever agreed with Steven A. Smith. I can’t help but want to scream “Cheese Doodles!” at him every time I see him.

But after JaMarcus Russell bashed on his old team, Steven A. didn’t mince words.

I just read one of the best rants I’ve ever read in my life. It was like Drew reached into my head and pulled the s**t right out and wrote it down in a way that actually makes sense.

First off, Miller Lite sucks. It’s f**king bland and I hate it. Samuel Smith’s Imperial Stout is my favorite beer (I also love Traquair House Ale). When some dumbass commercial tries to tell me that drinking Miller Lite is some ticket to manhood, I want to smash my TV into pieces.

And what the hell is a man card? I’m not gonna get started because Drew already said it:

I don’t know who invented the phrase “Turn in your man card,” but whoever it is should be taken out in the street and have his balls stomped on by a f**king marching band. Every Sunday, I’m now subjected to some goddamn Miller Lite ad where the guys in it are like, “ZOMG! You’re drinking a generic light beer? YOU’RE SUCH A FAG! Turn in your man card, faggity fag fag!”

As if drinking Miller goddamn Lite is somehow a manly endeavor. This s**t needs to stop. There’s no such thing as a man card. If there were, it would be the single most douchetastic thing in the history of the world. Darren Rovell would keep 12 of them in his money clip. Advertisers and film studios love to exploit the whole supposed male identity crisis they think America is suffering through right now. What’s that? You won’t drink Miller Lite? DURRRRR THEN I GUESS YOU’RE JUST A WALKING VAGINA DURRRRR BUY OUR SHIT.

No. F**k you. If I want to drink some piss warm generic light beer, I’ll do it. If I want to take a tandem bike ride with Peter King and enjoy a citrusy Shock Top while watching the sun set, I’ll do it. You want my man card? Take it. COLLECT ALL OF THEM. You get enough man cards and I bet they’ll give you a $10 rebate at the Ed Hardy Shop. I don’t need it. I’m not a real man. I listen to Snow Patrol. I drink rum and Diet Cokes. And now Major League Soccer: the crown jewel of suck-ass American sports.

Aside from Notre Dame, the pro football they have sucks too. By Sunday night, I am football-ed out, and if you want to guarantee I hate something, go ahead and include Bob Costas and Chris Collinsworth.  They have the biggest bunch of assholes this side of proctology school handling the NFL–Costas, Collinsworth, Peter King, Keith Olbermann.  Are they trying to keep this s**t a secret?! I feel like any second they are going to announce they’ve added Glen Beck as an analyst.

In NBC’s defense, they do have the Olympics. Every 4 years.  And Pro Football Talk, which I think is the best big NFL site out there.

They also acquired the Versus Network, which, depending on who you ask, either adds to or subtracts from their stable. If you ask this guy? Huge addition, with their non-f**king-stop fishing on Saturday mornings.  Maybe I’ll have a Pro Bass Talk to look forward to?

On the plus side, there is now no doubt about what to watch while napping.

When out of the limelight, celebrities like to unwind just like the rest of us by playing their favorite sports. The stress built up from busy schedules and the constant flash of paparazzi cameras often calls for some rigorous exercise or relaxing play to relieve the tensions of stardom. Less than a year ago he pleaded no contest to one count of misdemeanor domestic violence. He was placed on three years probation. Part of his sentence included that he stay the f**k away from the girl.

Later that day he confronted her outside of a restaurant. About six months later, he confronted her again outside of a restaurant and pulled her hair.

That’s a probation violation. It’s also felony stalking and assault.

This guy needs to be put in the penalty box for a little bit. Maybe a little dose of reality would do this s**twad some good.

ESPN released a very cool article that listed the top paid athletes in each country.

There were a lot of surprises the list and I’m sure you want to know who makes the most — as well as who makes the least.

When you look at the lowest paid athletes, it’s weird to see salaries on this list that are even lower than your own.

I’m not sure if it makes me feel better about my own salary, or worse about the shape of some countries’ economic conditions.

1.) Alex Rodriguez, USA. $32 million. No surprise here. People have been talking about A-Rod’s salary for over a decade now.

1.) Manny Pacquiao, Philippines. $32 million. He fought two fights in 2010. Now that’s what I’m talking about.

3.) Kimi Raikkonen, Finland.  $26.3 million. Never heard of the guy? Don’t feel bad, I hadn’t either. He’s a World Rally Championship superstar, apparently. And he makes a s**tload of money.

4.) Fernando Alonso, Spain. $22.7 million. Another race car driver, Alonso is a Formula One guy.

5.) Johan Santana, Venezuela. $21.6 million. The second baseball player in the top 5. Who says the MLBPA doesn’t have their s**t together?

Alfonso Soriano, Dominican Republic. $19 million. I’ll say it again: Alfonso Soriano makes $19 million a year.

Valentino Rossi, Italy. $20.8 million. If I had one guess, for Italy I would have thought it would have been a soccer player. Nope. Rossi races motorcycles.

Emmanuel Adebayor, Togo. $11 million. Not a particularly well-known country, Togo has a per capita GDP of $480 per year. Dude could buy his home country when he retires.

1.) Michael Junior Jackson, Niue. $5,000. This sprinter gets paid for six weeks of training. You could say Niue isn’t a haven for world-class athletes. He could make more than $5,000 panhandling in New York.

2.) Santosh Sahukhala, Nepal. $8,430. From a country that’s better known for it’s Boba Fett-like warriors than its athletes, this soccer player needs to put down the soccer ball and pick up a khukuri.

3.) Fabrice Santoro, Tahiti. $19,500. Finally, we’re about up to minimum wage. This tennis player could use a side gig at CrackDonald’s.

4.) Misdongarde Betoligar, Chad. $21,500. I would imagine 21 large goes a long way in the middle of Africa. It may not be David Beckham money, but it probably covers the cost of plumbing.

To put some of these low ass salaries in perspective, keep in mind that A-Rod made $53,781 per at bat last year. Manny Pacquiao made $44,444 per punch.

Some people like chess, others get into RPGs or crossword puzzles.

I don’t gamble. It’s simple, I don’t have enough money for it to be fun. I can lose $20 on a night of nickel slots, but that’s about my limit.

We’ve been subjected to years of poker tournaments on ESPN. I see it and instantly change the channel.

After the big three poker sites, Poker Stars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker, got shut down by the FBI, ESPN was one of the first companies that people thought of an accomplice.

ESPN advertised these websites often. How many times were you barely watching SportsCenter, half-awake at 3am, hearing the Poker Stars commercial in your ear?

Now we come to find out it was all illegal. There are going to be a lot of full time poker players looking for work in the very near future.

I wonder if they will qualify for unemployment?

So what will ESPN do? They need to pull it all, if not for PR reasons, then do it because it sucks.

The only time I’ve ever enjoyed watching poker on TV is when they were getting robbed.

But now that I have played a disgusting amount of Madden 2011, I have grown to enjoy Gus’s excitement – especially since he is almost as excited as me when the Browns win their 6th straight Super Bowl.

But his raw energy doesn’t have to stop at sports. What if he was there when we landed on the Moon?

Funny or Die

It was before Deadspin. Before The Big Lead. Way before JOCKpost.

And it was before Bruce Hooley.

Recently I moved to tropical Eden Prairie, Minnesota, but I still stream 97.1 The Fan via the web. The local sports guys up here are simply unlistenable.

I remember the days of Mike Ricordati being single, telling stories about his Italian grandparents.  He was a little annoying, but I loved how he always had an opinion, and usually ended his point with a punch line. 

I remember the completely male-centric alter ego of Chris Spielman, Dr. Chris.  He was the most chauvinistic a-hole on radio, and I loved every second of it.

I remember driving home, listening to Kirk Herbstreit talk about the new EA Sports NCAA Football game coming out and describing the differences between the “brand-new” PS3 and the PS2.  He also chagrined a little at the fact that Desmond Howard was on the cover.

Back then Spielman and Herbstreit were the main stars.  The station had its roster packed with former Buckeyes, lending it true credence as the Official Buckeye station.

Don’t forget, AM 610 used to be the official Buckeye station not too long ago.  1460 had to get a bunch of Buckeyes to build its credibility.  That’s really what built the station up in the first place.  Then the station started broadcasting the Ohio State football games.

Bruce Hooley came in with his voice made for newspaper, his strong and often unnecessary opinions and his pure and unadulterated hatred for all things Indiana.  I hoped that he would be one of those short-term guys, because his negativity didn’t seem to fit the mood of what made the station so cool in the first place.

Over the last two years the station has indeed gone through some pretty drastic changes.

They used to be AM 1460 The Fan.  When they moved to FM 97.1 The Fan, it was pretty hilarious to listen to the radio personalities say “F-97.1 The Fan”, because they had said 1460 so many times it took a little getting used to.

Going FM was a godsend to many of us who lived a little outside of Columbus.  And it made it possible for those of us who had to travel for work stay in range for an hour or two longer.  It signaled the arrival of sports media in central Ohio.

Then it came time for some roster changes. In came some weird guy from Minnesota, Scott Torger-something*. His hockey accent took some getting used to.

Then the station thankfully removed Tony Castricone (no offense, Tony, I’m sure you’re a nice guy) and replaced him with Adam “Tiny Hands” Neft. 

Hooley had his drive-time show moved to a mid-day show with Chris Spielman, and even though Bruce was generally a dickhead, he had Spielman around to keep him in check.  Spielman is no longer the chauvanist pig, over the years he mellowed out thanks to constant prodding from management.  He wasn’t always happy about it, but he learned to play within the rules.

In fact, the station served as a training ground for Spielman. It was pretty hilarious to watch his skills improve right in front of your very eyes.

With as much TV work as he is doing now, combined with the unfortunate passing of his wife, he has more responsibilities with his young children.  As such, Spielman is not on the station nearly as much as he used to be.

With Spielman gone more often, we were “treated” to more solo Hooley.  That’s enough to make you want to kill yourself.  I’m sorry, but he’s just too negative to be in the position he’s in.

Let me explain.

Ohio State football is the identity of many residents of Columbus, Ohio.  Whether they want to admit it or not, the citizens of Columbus are awfully proud of their Buckeyes.  It gives everyone something to rally around.  When the football team loses, the city goes through a two-day depression that is impossible to explain.  Yell out “O-H!” anywhere in town and you will get an “I-O” in return from someone, somewhere.

Until last week, Hooley had two hours to piss and moan about whatever he wanted. When Tattoo-gate reared its ugly head again a few weeks ago, we were treated to lectures from Bruce about how Jim Tressel is embarrassing him and that he is finding it hard to support a liar.  That may be true, but the Ohio State football coach is not someone you want to f**k with. 

He was essentially calling for Tressel’s job.  That crossed the line.  Jim Tressel is the most powerful man in Columbus, no matter if it seems right or not.  There is no question The Vest made one phone call, and Bruce’s walking papers were drafted that night.

It’s a classic case of biting the hand that feeds.  The station was surely pissing off the University by blasting it and constantly harping on its hypocrisy and the station manager had to make a call.

According to a source at the station, Hooley’s contract was up and he was told he wasn’t going to be renewed.  Maybe his reaction to Tattoo-gate was a temper tamtrum of sorts.

Hooley claims he left on a “mutual agreement” but you all know that’s bulls**t.  You can’t work at 97.1 The Fan and call the most powerful man in Columbus a liar and expect to keep your job.

Bruce Hooley will go back to writing and will do just fine.  The station will replace him and we’ll all forget about his condescending, grumpy old man show.

Who’s left at 97.1 The Fan?  In the morning they syndicate Mike & Mike in the Morning, then the dreadful, disgusting, arrogant, dispicable, delusional Colin Cowherd, and after that they have The Big Show, which was Hooley and Spielman’s show. Adam “Tiny Hands” Neft has been covering the space, but he is about as exciting as watching an elk take a s**t.

Kirk Herbstreit has moved to Tennessee, and he has been AWOL for a while.  Spielman would hopefully have a stronger role, but that is doubtful.

I have liked Ricordati for years.  He is immature, angry in a funny way, funny, immature and inappropriate (did I say immature?).  Many times I am surprised at some of the things they get away with.  His show with the aforementioned Scott Torger-something, Common Man and Torg, is actually a show I listen to whenever I can. Torg isn’t so weird anymore, except when he says “bag.”

After that they have two guys, Anthony Rothman and Dimitrious Stanley, who also host the Football Fever TV show before and after the Buckeye football games, hosting some Buckeye ass-kiss show.  It’s a very homeristic and lightweight show.  Hopefully they can do better than those guys sometime soon.

A lot of things are up in the air for the station, and it will be interesting to see what they do.  Herbstreit and Spielman were superstars with gigantic personalities.  That’s what brought the station here. 

Do I smell a job opportunity for Bobby Carpenter?  He better hop on that gravy train while he can.

*BTW – Torg, I only f**k with you ’cause you get everyone’s name wrong.

During a TV broadcast Digger Phelps and Bobby Knight were shooting the s**t and Knight claimed that the team was playing “chickens**t defense.”

After everyone got their uncomfortable laughs out of the way, Rece Davis obviously came back and apologized for Knight’s “salty” language.

Of course, this isn’t the first person to drop a chicken s**t on ESPN.  We can’t forget about Barry Melrose’s advice on what Canadians use for crow’s feet.

Apparently, women make up 25% of ESPN’s regular audience, which surprised the s**t out of me. How many girls do you know that wake up and lay on the couch watching the same episode of SportsCenter over, and over, and over again? I don’t know any. Which is kind of surprising now that I think about it, because I play a hell of a lot of softball.

But like I said, women getting their own website didn’t really surpise me so much as the fact that this isn’t just an idea, this site actually exists! It has made it past all the stages of production, and it is a full on website with articles and everything. It’s pretty cute.

I decided to check out the site, and to my surprise again, it wasn’t all chick stuff. Yeah, so the first story was about Olympic Skier, Gretchen Bleiler, but then it moves on to Albert Haynesworth, College Basketball, and the Charlotte Hornets. I was able to read more than one article, so so far so good. All of the authors on the site that I saw were women, but you honestly couldn’t tell by reading the articles. I think it’s a good thing that ESPN is starting to branch out from its typical and rather boring mold that they created into something that might end up being a bit more creative/original.

I just hope they take this opportunity to not be so ESPN like. Maybe not quite so PC.

This spread includes Team USA goalie Ryan Miller as Carl Spackler from Caddyshack, some bum named Garrett Wilson and King Felix Hernandez as characters in Pulp Fiction(which I can only assume are Jules and Vincent), and Danica Patrick as Veronica Corningstone from Anchorman. All iconic characters from iconic movies, right? Much like Ms. Vonn’s “role”.

While those other movies are famous/loved/quoted-to-death because they are either hilarious or beautifully written, the only line I can remember from “Basic Instinct” is when the fat guy from Law & Order yells to Michael Douglas, “That’s her p***y talkin’!!” And boy, was it ever. As any guy my age knows, “Basic Instinct” is iconic solely because of what rests between Sharon Stone’s legs. There isn’t anything surprising in the film, other than it revolving around murder, I guess. A smoking hot woman f**ks a guy into believing anything she wants?  Oldest trick in the book.

Vonn is a dead-ringer for Stone, at least in all the visible parts. But like the movie, no one gives a f**k about those parts.  Do you think the carpet matches the curtains?

It’s really the next step in the progression of home sports watching. You use to be able to get baseball games on regular “antenna” TV, but now you need a cable package. Soon, I am sure cable companies will charge a fee to watch big games like the Super Bowl or the BCS National Championship. It only makes sense. You gonna tell me that people wouldn’t pay $40 bucks to watch the Super Bowl? I’m sure they would lose a few casual fans, but they would more than make up for it.

Personally, I think this blows. I’ve always been a proponent of watching games from my home. You may not get the same feel as you would in the stadium, but there definitely is an advantage to watching a game from your couch; instant replays, no need for binoculars, and not to mention much cheaper alcohol. But if I have to pay to sit on my couch just to watch some worthless f**king team disappoint me yet again, it won’t quite seem like i’m getting my money’s worth.

UFC and Boxing are really the only two “sports” that get away with pay per view events. It probably has more to do with the inconsistency of the events, as the typical big 3 sports usually have some type of regularity to their schedules. But most of those fans are weirdos that just love watching dudes beat the piss out of each other.

For a normal sports junkie like myself, I’m not sure I could afford to pay to watch all of my team’s games, let alone all of the other games that I watch that I could really give two s**ts about. This would really effect my existence on this planet. I’m actually getting more pissed off as I write this. I mean, who the hell is going to want to pay $40 bones to watch Florida vs. Appalachian State?!?! F**k!! Ass!!

Except for in Oswalt’s case, we were laughing with him.  Sorry, Skip, we’re laughing at you.

The internet has gotten their collective panties in a twist over Colin Cowherd’s remarks about John Wall and his dougie.  F**k Colin Cowherd.  It doesn’t matter what he says because he is THE douche of all douches.  When people get all worked up over what he says, it just prolongs his existence.  I wish people could really get a grip on that.  Until we start ignoring his dumb ass, he’s going to be there.

But with all the buzz surounding Wall and his dougie, I guess Skip couldn’t help but get his dougie on — giving us this gem of an animated GIF.

We all know how that went.

You’d think the second time around, they’d try a little diversity.  Nope.  All but one picked the Rangers to spank the Giants in the World Series.  Classically again, they were dead wrong.

Today on Sportcenter, Chris McKendry let the name that she probably refers to Roethlisburger with her friends slip out, when she called him “Roethliscock-burger”.

But I don’t know what else you can expect from McKendry after the way Tedy Bruschi enthusiastically described the Saints defense. “Getting low”,”getting penetration”, “stop his momentum”, “it’s all about inches”. That’s a lay up for any person that has even a resemblance of a dirty mind.

The Big Lead

Believe it or not, his crimes are unrelated to the onslaught of s**tfaceness and douchebaggery he inflicts upon the comsuming masses daily.

He’s being held on a felony domestic violence charge. He was released very recently on $50,000 bail.

Supposedly his chick was flirting with some other dude and he got pissed. LA Police say that the two were exchanging harsh words as they got into the vehicle to leave.

The real party started when they got back to the apartment, where Mariotti allegedly pushed and shoved her leaving cuts and bruises.

Many of you are cheering for Mariotti’s hopefully immenent demise, as are we. Mariotti is one of the most smug, intolerable, and most importantly, incorrect, “personalities” in sports media. He has very few fans, and although he boasts of popularity, it’s mostly because people enjoy hating him.

Next up: His lawyer proclaiming the ridiculousness of these charges while smugly predicting his exoneration.

We can only pray that this incident takes his sorry ass off of our flatscreens for good.
