With the eyes of the sports world focused on the firing of Bum’s son and the overall collapse of the Dallas Cowboys, the headlines involving the Auburn quarterback are getting pushed to the side.
Reports surfaced that a man representing Newton and his family asked for a large sum of money in return for the Heisman hopeful’s commitment to Mississippi State. At first, the Newton supporters called these allegations preposterous and defended their quarterback, whose good name was being dragged through the mud in the midst of a runaway Heisman season.
Good name?
Newton, who was enrolled at the University of Florida was involved in multiple instances of academic cheating. In one case, Newton purchased a term paper off the internet and tried to pass it off as his own. There’s an original plan.
Newton’s character has been called into question even further after a report surfaced that he had been arrested for stealing a fellow student’s lap top. Uh oh, Cam…
Why would Florida coach Urban Meyer let a kid like Cam Newton get away? The kid is obviously talented, but maybe Meyer saw something in his character that the rest of us haven’t seen. At least not yet.
Where there is smoke, there is fire… and now the that the dust has settled in the Lone Star State, the prying eyes of the media can focus their attention on the Auburn Tiger’s quarterback, and that’s not good news for the War Eagle fans.
ESPN’s Joe Schad confirms that on two separate occasions, Cam Newton and his father spoke of “pay for play” with Mississippi State, and Cam’s father Cecil pointed to a third party source for specific details. This was an allegation that the Newton family had been calling ridiculous.
Last week, both Cecil and Cam Newton had adamantly denied the allegations. This week? Neither had a comment.
Regardless of how this story unfolds, Newton’s image has been tarnished and that is something that will not reflect positively in the eyes of the Heisman voters. The Mission statement of the Heisman Trophy Trust states that they shall ensure the continuation and integrity of the award. While I do believe the best quarterback in the nation will win the Heisman Trophy this year, he won’t be coming out of Auburn.
Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Kellen Moore.
