The US Postal Service has unveiled commemorative Negro Leagues stamps and they are veerrrrrry niiiiiice.
Upon hearing of the news, my first question was: “How many?” I was then subsequently disappointed to hear there were only two of them.
The stamps have an awesome 1956 Topps-style color about them and the illustrations are dead-on. One features a player sliding into home with the ball mid-air, a foot from the catcher’s mitt. The umpire on the play is calling a safe, with all the fervor he can possibly muster.
The other stamp features Rube Foster, visionary and founder of the National Negro League.
Two other negro league superstars have had their own stamps in the past. Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson made the 1999 commemorative All-Century Team collection.
I need me some Cool Papa Bell and Buck Leonard — Turkey Stearnes, anyone?
